summary Psychological factors of temporomandibular disorder patients are believed to have a significant role in the aetiology and maintenance of the disorders. Sixty‐two temporomandibular disorder patients, 67 dental patients, and 70 asymptomatic subjects were compared for psychometric profile by using a self‐report symptom inventory. Temporomandibular disorder patients were more depressed and anxious than dental patients and asymptomatic subjects, and were also more somatized than asymptomatic subjects.
