This paper deals with stereological problems for spatial systems of homothetic particles. In contrast to the traditional technique of estimating the size distribution of the particles from the sizes of section profiles we introduce a new method exploiting size and shape of the observed profiles. The shapes of the section profiles contain additional information about the sizes of the particles. This leads to improved stereological estimation of size distribution. As an example the case is studied when the particles form cubes with random edge length. The method is applied to a two‐phase WC–Co cermet structure with cubic particles.
