In view of current international interest and research on the elderly, numerous questions present themselves. Examples are: how rapidly are populations ageing? Is physical and functional decline in old age inevitable? Can morbidity be compressed into the final years of life? Are social, medical and other resources available for coping with the increasing numbers of elderly? Not least, how do old people themselves feel about ageing?
