Since the recent shift of emphasis away from long‐stay hospitalization for elderly people the availability of clinical placements for student nurses to gain experience in caring for elderly people has been reduced. This paper explores the potential value of Teaching Nursing Homes, already well established in the United States, as a possible alternative placement to facilitate learning. In analysing the models of affiliation in current use critically the authors conclude that the concept of Teaching Nursing Homes offers vast potential, not only to nursing education in the United Kingdom, but in raising the profile of care of the elderly, provided that the most appropriate form of affiliation model is adopted.
