Knowledge of the biology and ecology of anadromous populations of the hilsa [or hilsa shad], Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton), indicates that the juveniles are the same fish that is known locally in Bangladesh as ‘jatka’. However, this view is not always accepted by fishermen and management authorities. To confirm the status of jatka, samples were taken from inland waters, mostly from its known nursery grounds, and the genotypes and genotype distributions were compared with previous analyses of adult hilsa. With one exception, all jatka samples displayed the same patterns as adult hilsa, and the distributions of genotypes of the polymorphic systems PGM, AAT, EST (two loci) and UMP were in fairly good accordance between adult and juveniles from the same areas.
