PURPOSE: To provide clinicians with a concise review of the literature applicable to clinical management of the dying patient. BACKGROUND: Various clinical trials, 1 epidemiologic studies, and personal accounts have documented that a large part of the suffering of the terminally ill is preventable and ameliorable. Broadcast media 2 and creative artists 3 have also highlighted the fact that physicians are poorly prepared to recognize and address symptom management at the end of life.
