A synoptic key for the identification of three morphologically similar species of Monilinia principally affecting stone and pome fruit is described. Seven morphological characters were assessed after 10 days incubation under well‐defined cultural conditions. No one character was found to separate the species. However, the synoptic key resulted in the correct identification of all isolates tested when compared with a molecular method.
