This paper uses a case example to discuss the importance of double description as the basic means by which new information may be gained. Drawing distinctions between different descriptions allows families and individuals to receive and respond to new information whick makes new responses possible. The fact that information, and thus double description, permeates every aspect of therapy is discussed. A detailed examination of a young man's struggle to bowl out his disabling fears illustrates a number of common therapeutic techniques and shows how they may all be understood as examples of double description.
