Previous research on the development and use of a focal family hypothesis and a focal plan to help families with a symptomatic child was moderately effective clinically but had a number of flaws. Current developments in family description and a model of linking salient family observations, life‐cycle and dynamic factors are described to create a focal hypothesis and plan. Methods of assessing the success of a plan and the role of the effectiveness of current techniques of family intervention are described.
