In the April 2013 issue of Immunology and Cell Biology , we present an important special feature on in vivo imaging. Recent technological advances in imaging infrastructure and systems are leading to the discovery of previously hidden features and phenomena. Key exponents of in vivo imaging describe the use of state‐of‐the‐art imaging in their respective fields and illustrate the impact this technique has had on the understanding of inflammation and immunology. Together, the articles illustrate the range of advanced imaging methodologies available today, and detail their use in the investigation of a wide variety of immune responses. Further background information on this important topic is available through the accompanying web focus which links to related articles from across Nature Publishing Group.
