Summary When mouse spleen cell were cultured in vitro without the deliberate addition of any stimulating cells, T cell‐mediated cytotoxicity was generated which could be detected by lysis of 51 Cr‐labelled syngeneic and allogeneic tumour target cells. The clonal basis of such spontaneous cytotoxicity was investigated by limit dilution analysis and a comparison made between it and so‐called “tumour‐specific”’ cytotoxicity generated in vitro .
