Summary Toxic lupin extracts affected the nuclear apparatus of cells in lamb kidney tissue culture, leading to arrest at metaphase and the production of mutinucleated cells. Some cells in arrested metaphase adopt bizarre shapes (“lup” cells). Results showed that cell cultures compared favourably with mice for the detection of toxicity in lupin extracts.
