Summary Magnesium sulphate, given into the brachial artery, has been shown to have a dilator action on the blood vessels of the human forearm. The dilatation affects the vessels of both skin and muscle and is not due to stimulation of the β ‐receptors to a cholinergic mechanism or to the release of histamine. The vasodilator action of magnesium sulphate on the forearm does not appear to be influenced by the sympathetic nerves, but is abolished by the simultaneous infusion of calcium gluconate into the brachial artery.
