Summary The effect of storage on amylase activity was measured in sera from normal individuals and from patients with suspected acute pancreatitis. The sera were stored for 18 and 22 h at 37°, 5°, and −19° Amylase in serum from the patients was less stable than that in normal serum. The instability was not affected by dilution or by variations of temperature. It may have been due to the presence of an unstable isoamylase released into the serum in acute pancreatitis. This finding should be taken into account when interpreting the significance of an amylase estimation performed on stored serum from a patient with suspected acute pancreatitis.
