Summary Parathyroid extract enhanced cellular turnover of 32 P in rat kidney in vivo and in vitro . The parathyroid extract contained glycerol, and injected glycerol alone increased the uptake of 32 P by renal tissue as much as 50%. Glycerol, but not parathyroid extract, also increased the renal content of phosphorus. Parathyroid extract, a glycerol‐free parathyroid extract, and glycerol all stimulated the uptake of 32 P in rat renal cortical slices under aerobic conditions, glycerol having the greatest effect. Separation of phosphate fractions suggested that glycerol and parathyroid extract stimulated the uptake of 32 P by different pathways.
