Summary Strains of Vibrio cholerae which are known to conjugate have been examined for the presence of sex pili by electron microscopy using negative staining. With male strains, denoted as P + , stubby filaments of typical dimensions for pili (fimbriae) and clearly distinct from the polar flagella have been found on about 60% of the bacterial cells examined. No pili were detected with female (P − ) strains.
