Summary The development of bactericidal activity in peritoneal macrophages from foetal to adult rats has been demonstrated with regard to Salmonella typhimurium C5 and Escherichia coli . (Lilly). Concomitant changes in morphology, acid phosphatase levels and intracytoplasmic inclusions have been described. The phagocytic activity of these cells, however, does not appear to be related to the age of animal from which the macrophages are obtained. The significance of the increasing ability of these cells to degrade bacteria has been discussed with regard to the ontogenesis of the immune response.
