Summary The complement fixing and gel‐precipitating activity of chloroform‐ methanol extracts of Mycoptasma pneumoniae is heat stable, resistant to lipase and protease. The extract is of low antigenicity in guinea‐pigs and rabbits. Treatment with alkali in aqueous media and alkaline methanolysis caused some diminution of serological activity. Treatment with sodium metaperiodate and with a crude carbohydrase caused a substantial drop in serological activity. The heat stability, resistance to protease and sensitivity to periodate and carbo‐ hydrase suggest the presence of carbohydrate determinants in the lipid hapten.
