Summary In a search for more efficient methods of treatment of peripheral vascular disease, the technique of iontophoresis of guanethidine into fingers of healthy male volunteers has been investigated. The effects of this drug on heat output in 10 subjects and on sympathetic vasoconstrictor reflexes in five subjects were measured by calorimetry. Although an increase in heat output and partial sympathetic blockade occurred, the degree of these changes was much less than after intra‐arterial guanethidine, and the doses of drug required per unit volume of tissue were greater. Furthermore, the occurrence of ulcers after iontophoresis precludes this form of administration from clinical practice.
