Summary An outbreak of suspected avain botulism in the Perth metropolitan area was investigated. From the examination of various soil samples and animal specimens it was concluded that the outbreak was in fact botulism and was caused by Clostridium botulinum type Cα. The epidemiology of such outbreaks is discussed.
