Summary In the four mouse strains used (A, Gowan A, E × H and C 3 H), the incidence of aberrant metaphases in bone marrow and spleen was recorded. Both tissues in the Gowan A mice showed a higher susceptibility to urethane than did those of the other three strains. The effect of urethane on the mitotic cells of mice of different ages and strains is shown. By studying ttie incidence of abnormal metaphases in the spleen, 2–12 day old mice were found to be more susceptible to urethane than older mice. An estimation of the mitotic index in the spleen of mice of different ages showed a marked decline from two to 12 days old, and then maintained a steady level.
