SUMMARY The changes resulting from massive intravenous doses of ectromelia virus have been studied in the liver. The growth of virus and the changes in the composition of whole liver and of its cytoplasmic components, in various biochemical functions of the liver, and in its histology are described. A drop in the rate of synthesis of some proteins by the liver has been found at a time when the rate of virus synthesis is increasing. Luria's theory of virus‐produced repressors of host function is discussed in relation to findings in this host‐ virus system.
