Mitochondria are comprised of two aqueous subcompartments, the matrix and the intermembrane space (IMS). The import of proteins to the IMS is poorly understood and two studies published in this issue of the EMBO Journal provide further insight into this. Potting et al (2010) and Tamura et al (2010) show that Mdm35 is important for the mitochondrial import of Ups proteins.
