Drug action depends not only on the direct consequences of the interaction between the drug and its target but also on other consequences within the complex physiological system that is the human body. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) has brought together investigators from the emerging field of systems biology with pharmacologists to explore possible avenues for utilizing the concepts of systems biology to explore problems in pharmaceutical action and drug discovery. Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics (2010) 88 1, 17–19. doi: 10.1038/clpt.2010.69
