Strain in Crystals Detected by X-Ray

X-ray diffraction Laue photographs of deformed polycrystalline materials often show asterism. The Laue technique together with the polarizing microscope were employed to detect strains in samples of hydrated cement, Ca( OH)[2], and analytical reagent grade NaCl in the form of compacts, powders and wafers. Distortion was detected in the crystal lattice of Ca(OH)[2] formed by hydration in excess water of a normal cement and in Ca(OH)[2] formed in cement hydrated as a paste. Microscopic examination showed symmetrically arranged inclusions in the Ca(OH)[2] formed by hydration in excess water. Strain was also detected in the compacted materials.Les photographies de substances polycristallines d\ue9form\ue9es, obtenues au moyen de la m\ue9thode de radiocristallographie de Laue, indiquent souvent qu'il s'y produit de l'ast\ue9risme. La m\ue9thode de Laue et le microscope polarisant ont \ue9t\ue9 utilis\ue9s pour mettre en \ue9vidence les d\ue9formations existant \ue0 l'int\ue9rieur d'\ue9chantillons de ciment hydrat\ue9, de Ca(OH)[2] et de NaCl de qualit\ue9 analytique, sous forme de comprim\ue9s, de poudres et de paillettes. On a d\ue9cel\ue9 une certaine distorsion dans le r\ue9seau cristallin du Ca(OH)[2] form\ue9 par hydratation dans l'exc\ue9dent d'eau d'un ciment normal et dans le Ca(OH)[2] form\ue9 dans le ciment mouill\ue9 \ue0 la consistance d' une p\ue2te. L'examen au microscope a permis de d\ue9couvrir des inclusions dispos\ue9es sym\ue9triquement \ue0 l'int\ue9rieur du Ca(OH)[ 2] obtenu par hydratation dans un exc\ue9dent d'eau.
