From Balzac and onward many writers of the nineteenth century published both journalism and literary fiction. This paper focuses, first, on the reexploitation and reorientation in Balzac of journalistic texts when refashioned in novels and short stories. Second, the paper compares the particular journalistic look with the literary strategies of visualization in texts by Nerval, Germain Nouveau, Villiers de l'Isle‐Adam and Zola. The intermingling of the look of the journalist with the authors' mimetic visualization underscores the importance of realism through the entire nineteenth century.
