Eight hundred and ninety‐four inpatients in four hospitals in Edinburgh were assessed for oral care maintenance and dental needs during their hospitalization. The data were used to estimate future inpatients' dental requirements and the hospital dental services which would be necessary to meet these needs. Seventeen percent of the sample was found to be suffering from pain or discomfort of dental origin and over 30 % were considered to require some form of dental treatment before their expected date of inpatient discharge.
