This study was made possible due to the merger of two Trusts 2 years ago. The Early Intervention Project (EIP) was developed in East Yorkshire which is a largely rural setting with the exception of Bridlington which has many of the problems associated with urban areas. Individuals in the project were matched with young people in Hull who had been receiving treatment as usual. Participants were compared with information gathered from patient records and interviews with clients and relatives. Preliminary results are encouraging. One of the most striking outcomes was employment (42% of EIP clients unemployed compared with 100% of the TAU group). TAU clients were more likely to have presented to services previously and been discharged (TAU 41.7%, EIP 15.8%). Readmission rates – EIP 15.8%, TAU 58.3%. Qualitative feedback revealed generally high praise for the EIP project with the exception of experiences of in‐patient units. This was reflected in both groups and represents an area which needs urgent attention. There were clear differences in the service each group received which was reflected both in outcome and satisfaction. The project is currently being extended across the integrated trust.
