Aim To provide in the absence of a fully comprehensive service a specific nurse‐led support service for in‐patients. St Ann's is a large psychiatric hospital providing in‐patient care and treatment for a large rural and urban population. The development and funding for an Early Psychosis service is planned for spring 2003. Meantime there is a need for an in‐patient early psychosis support service. This poster will outline the development, approach and integration of the St Ann's Early Psychosis Support service (STEPS) into the existing adult acute in‐patient service. STEPS has been developed within the existing nursing resource to provide specialist care along side standard in‐patient management. STEPS utilizes a team of nurses with specific training in psycho‐social interventions. Weaim to promote adjustment and psycho‐social recovery of individuals and their carers during the traumatic period of admission. STEPS nurses cowork patients and carers and provide specific advice on their management to other professionals. The service has been piloted for 6 months on 2 units and has now been expanded to cover all acute in‐patient areas.
