The subcellular localization of β ‐oxidation of fatty acids in plants has been the subject of controversy for many years. Peroxisomes have been accepted as the sole site of fatty acid β ‐oxidation for the past 15 years, whilst a proposed dual location, in both mitochondria and peroxisomes, has been disputed. Accumulated evidence demonstrating mitochondrial β ‐oxidation now demands that a dual location for plant β ‐oxidation must be considered.
