A 12‐month study of runoff and suspended sediment yield was undertaken in a 0.93 km 2 catchment in southern Chile. Rainfall and total runoff for the period December 1983–November 1984 were estimated at 2170 and 1150 mm, respectively, representing a runoff coefficient of 0.53. Suspended sediment concentrations ranged between 14 and 186 mg L −1 , with an average of 71 mg L −1 . Suspended sediment yield was estimated at 84 t or 90 t km −2 yr −1 .
