A statistical model is developed for the error analysis of surveying sediment deposition in reservoirs. The estimation variance of both the volume and weight of deposition can be calculated from a simple expression. The calculated error is shown to depend on inherent spatial variability, type of measurement, and the number of survey points. Survey networks for six reservoirs were designed by the model in such a way that the total weight of deposition could be measured with a coefficient of variation in the range 0.02–0.06.
