Parameter estimates for a conceptual, nonlinear storage routing model are derived on the basis of wave theory. An iterative solution scheme for the nonlinear storage routing model is analyzed with respect to its convergence and is compared in an application to quasi‐nonlinear and to linear storage routing schemes of the Muskingum type. The comparison shows that a noniterative, quasi nonlinear scheme is an excellent substitute for the fully nonlinear storage algorithm.
