The problem of abstraction from a well penetrating a multiple‐layered aquifer, each layer being independently homogeneous, isotropic, and artesian, is considered. For the two‐layered case with a constant abstraction rate, an analytical solution is derived for the aquifer response. The solution is simplified to give an expression for the drawdown in the well, and it is shown that for certain special cases the two‐layered solution reduces to an existing solution for the equivalent single‐layered aquifer. The effects of aquifer stratification on the response in the well are investigated by comparing the solutions for different parameter values.
