A kinematic model is developed to discuss surface irrigation when the infiltration function consists of a long‐time gravity term plus a short‐time capilliary or sorbtivity term. The corresponding model equations are solved either exactly or numerically, and several graphical solutions are presented. Using the kinematic solution, we suggest a condition for the validity of the corresponding Lewis‐Milne problem, and from the shallow water or dynamic equations we suggest a condition for the validity of our kinematic solution.
