A generalized plotting position formula for estimation of the recurrence interval or its reciprocal, the exceedance probability of hydrologic events in an incomplete data sample containing both extraordinarily large and small historical values, is derived. The derivation is based on order statistics analysis and is independent of the probability distribution of the hydrologic variable. It is shown that the Weibull formula is a special case of the generalized formula.
