We discuss two methods by which the parameters of a simple model of the occurrence of rainy and dry episodes can be estimated from data. We first apply the method of moments to the mean and variance of the fraction of a fixed time period during which it is raining. The second method derives maximum likelihood estimates from observations of the weather at regular intervals.
