This paper considers the twin problems of the nature of discretization and the size of the unit of discretization in dam theory. It compares the probabilities of emptiness and of fullness of the dam obtained by the discretization schemes suggested by Moran and Doran. It is proved that the probability of emptiness for the former scheme is always greater than that obtained for the latter scheme. The probability distribution of the dam content for the latter scheme is derived for the case when the release is the unit of measurement. Finally, the probabilities of emptiness and of fullness of the dam for the two schemes are compared with the exact values for the Erlangian input case.
