The existence of different types of uncertainties in deterministic aquifer models and the need of quantitatively accounting for them are discussed. The case of one‐dimensional saturated flow represented by a linear parabolic partial differential equation with a stochastic forcing function is analyzed. The dependence of the autocovariance function of the hydraulic head on properties of the forcing function and nature of the aquifer is brought out.
