The role of allochthonous organic substances in the solubilization of manganese was investigated. The organic substances used were leachaes of a variety of watershed materials, fulvic acid, and a number of pure model compounds. It was found that manganese concentration and water color were directly proportional, in most cases, and that the organic materials comprising the color are effective in dissolving manganese oxides and stabilizing the dissolved manganese in solution.
