A method of predicting water temperature in large bodies of water has been presented in this paper. The vertical water column is subdivided into two layers: an isothermal surface layer and a temperature‐stratified diffusion layer. Meteorological data, either real or imposed, are used for calculating the variation of water temperature with time in the surface layer utilizing the thermal budget method. Then in the diffusion layer the temperature profiles are obtained by solving the time‐dependent energy equation by the similarity technique with variable density, conductivity, and diffusivity and zero velocity. Calculated water temperatures are compared with the measured values. The comparison shows favorable agreement.
