The spreading of a water layer of constant thickness over a near horizontal soil surface is considered. An analytic solution is obtained and compared with an earlier solution. The present solution is applied consistently for short times and estimates gravity effects properly by taking into account the pressure head of the water layer. An infiltration law valid for all times is also suggested to obtain numerical solutions in practical cases.
