A mathematical model has been developed to simulate the Boussinesq equation for a two‐dimensional water table aquifer. Transient solutions to the finite difference approximations based on an irregular mesh matrix were obtained by the alternating direction implicit method. The precision of the model was evaluated by comparing the volume of water pumped with the amount of water released from storage and the amount received from a nearby recharging river. Preliminary results indicate that the model is suitable for the study of transient flow in a permeable sand and gravel aquifer.
