It is postulated that the topologically optimum sequential sampling procedure for a stream network is to sample by successive elimination through division of the network at the centroid. The total number of samples is bounded by a minimum of [log 3 M o ] and a maximum of 2 {1 + [log 3 M o ]}. The mode is given by 1 + [log 2 M o ] where M o is the link magnitude of the stream at the outlet. The results are used to develop a uniform sampling plan for the Edisto River in South Carolina.
