The performance of the Van Bavel‐Myers lysimeter has been improved in two units installed at Mead, Nebraska. The units function according to design specifications (0.01 mm precision; 0.05 mm accuracy) after the following modifications were made: (1) provide drainage to maintain underground portions of the lysimeter in a water free condition, (2) relocate the electrical junctions to assure high electrical resistance between ground and the strain gage load cell, and (3) make mechanical damping devices accessible for cleaning and adjustment.
