The Monod biokinetic relations have been used to develop a 3‐parameter model to describe the biochemical oxidation of waste water substrates as observed in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) tests, including those tests with an initial lag phase. A criterion relating the biological parameters of the model to the occurence of a lag phase is presented. The model was applied to several sets of data that reflect a variety of conditions. Some statistical problems involving parameter correlation were noted.
