The estimation of the parameters of hydrologic models often poses difficulties since nonnegativity requirements, inequalities, and other constraints limit the use of standard statistical analyses. The use of linear programing techniques to estimate the parameters based on the criteria of minimum absolute deviations and on minimum maximum deviations appears to be advantageous since well established algorithms and computer programs exist.
