A model of transient moisture movement in a composite soil moisture ground‐water system is described. The model was used to study two‐dimensional flow in response to a falling water table. The solution provided information about the interaction of the saturated and unsaturated portions of the subsurface system. The results of the composite model are compared with those obtained from three one‐dimensional ground‐water models. That soil moisture and nonlinearity do not have a significant effect on the position of the water table in the system studied is inferred.
