A population balance model to predict the excess flow above the normal channel flow involves four coefficients that can be evaluated at a downstream point from pulse impulses of water upstream. Furthermore, the parameters can be directly related to the general characteristics of the stream in terms of hold up, bypassing, and dead space. The model itself comprises two parallel series of well‐mixed vessels without interchange of water and can be modified to make the model more complex. Application of the model to data from the Colorado River in Texas indicates that the model satisfactorily represents the excess flow for pulselike stream releases.
