The characteristic equation for the propagation of elastic waves in a floating ice sheet is derived and discussed, with special emphasis on the evaluation of phase velocity for very large and very small wavelengths. The solutions cannot be reduced to symmetric and antisymmetric modes as in the case of a plate in a vacuum or a liquid. Among the waves discussed are compressional, shear, longitudinal, flexural, Rayleigh, Stoneley, and Love waves.
